Woodward in Winter
Woodward in Winter

You wouldn’t think a painter could find things in nature to paint after the leaves and color have left the landscape. But the shapes and energy of bare trees in winter should inspire any painter. Woodward Park is just as beautiful in winter as it is in the other seasons.

Old Academy Shack
Old Academy Shack

This iconic building stands amid rolling hills and golden grasses, northeast of Clovis. It is a reminder of early year cattle raising activity. I have been told that this little building has served many different purposes. I’m glad it’s still there for painters like me.

September Song
September Song (heard thru the orchards)

This small painting was an experiment in combining techniques such as pouring, splattering, salting and lifting. The name came to me as the paint took on colors and shapes reminding me that fall is just around the corner.

Riverbottom in November
Riverbottom in November

It takes shorter days and frosty nights to bring out the beauty of foliage that appeared unremarkable just a few weeks earlier. This was painted at a small clearing near the river.

Mesa Rosa
Mesa Rosa

When the sun is just right on the bluffs near Friant, the color is intense. I would imagine these plateaus were the lookout points for our valley’s native people and the settlers who followed.

Easton Fog
Easton Fog

My painting group ventured down Elm Avenue on the foggiest day of the year. It was very scary but we were rewarded with the fog just lifting in the dormant orchards. The sun made the fog sparkle and treated us to about 30 minutes of fascinating color changes.

Sometimes when I head down to the river to paint, I come across the most unexpected compositions. This old tree branch framed a sunny spot that I couldn’t resist. I never made it to the river that day.

Dormant Season

It's no wonder the leaves hide out until spring. It was a January morning when I painted this orchard and I was fascinated by the
way the cold winter sun reflected on the icy ground, giving it an
iridescent feeling.

Eaton Trail

When I painted this northeast view of the valley, I was impressed by the early morning runners who have discovered this wonderful trail. Since my attention was drawn to the layers of mountains, I left the runners out of the painting.

Along the Kings River, near Reedley, I found this run down barn, being protected by a fence of questionable security. It's always amazing to me that beautiful views can be found in very mundane locations.

Golden Trees At Woodward
Golden Trees At Woodward

Just as I began to paint these beautiful trees in Woodward Park, the rain started so I painted fast. Looking carefully, raindrops can be seen in the foliage.

In doing a little research on pomegranates, I leaned that these
luscious red globes are known by their nickname, The Jewels of
Winter, in certain areas of the western hemisphere.

Judy's Vineyard
Judy's Vineyard

My friend Judy invites painters to her vineyard, located east of town.
I tried to capture the changes in early spring as the green leaves
were just beginning to cover the vines. The air was clear and the
mountains were the perfect backdrop.

I felt like I had taken a trip to Arizona when I painted Table Mountain from the east side. From that view, I saw that there are several "tables" stretching for miles. The dust in the air and the high temperatures created the feeling of intense color.

Scarlet Trees
Scarlet Trees

On the northeast corner of Woodward Park, there stands the most
glorious grove of giant pistache trees which turn this color in late
fall. I don't know why they are so different from others, but I'm glad
I know to go back each year.

I like to paint fruit while it's still on the branches but sometimes,
I like to try a "fruity" still life. I liked the way these pears turned
out.

Springtime In Friant Valley

Most people are unaware of how beautiful this valley is. From a high spot, just down river from Friant Dam, I found this view of wonderful rolling hills with the higher mountains providing the perfect background.
