Australian Iris
Australian Iris

My friend JoAnn discovered this iris on a trip to the coast and
brought it to her Fresno garden. The abundance of blooms makes
it a standout.

Jennifer's Blue Iris
Jennifer's Blue Iris

Painting an iris in a unique way is always the challenge. This single bloom and the plant structure appealed to me when I visited the
Lone Oak Iris Ranch. When I walked the rows of this location, I was
on the lookout for that one spectacular flower bloom. I think I
found it with Shady Lady (var.).

Blue Hydrangea
Blue Hydrangea

These flowers are a lot easier to grow than they are to paint. When painting flowers with lots of petals, the big challenge is
knowing when to stop.

A Rose is a Rose is a Rose
A Rose is a Rose is a Rose

To achieve the rich textured feeling in this painting, I used several techniques including painting, both positive and negative, stenciling
and stamping. It says "roses" over and over again. The painting
was an award winner at the San Joaquin Fine Arts Competition.

At the Flower Farm
At the Flower Farm

Just north of Fresno is a commercial flower farm with acres of flowers grown to supply farmers' markets throughout the valley. Every row of zinnias seemed more perfect than its neighbor. I drug my easel and paints into the middle of a row and tried to capture the essence of
this sturdy, colorful and heat loving flower.

Blue Iris
Blue Iris

For me, painting iris is an enormous challenge. Where do those petals start and where do they end. I can get lost in mid painting. I tried to capture that one beautiful bloom in this blue iris.

Dutch Iris
Dutch Iris

A cousin to bearded iris, the Dutch Iris in this painting was hardly
noticeable in a field of their larger, showier cousins. I found them
at the far end of the field at the Lone Oak Iris Ranch on Old Friant
Road.

Flowers for Diana
Flowers for Diana

While I was painting this large group of spring flowers, my friend
Diana looked over my shoulder and said, "I've got to have that."
That explains the name.

Flowers from a Summer Garden
Flowers From A Summer Garden

At a workshop conducted by a nationally known flower painter, I
learned quite a bit about floral painting and how to make them come
to life. This deeply colored mahogany background seemed just right
for the delicate foreground.

Forsythia

Every spring, forsythia offers the brightest yellow in the garden.
This impressionistic painting captures the excitement of these early bloomers.

Gentle Touch
Gentle Touch

This very soft floral was created on a mild spring morning. I always
respond to the weather when I paint and spring morning paintings
usually have the "gentle touch."

of the cloth and flowers are the mark of late spring.

Grandiflora
Grandiflora

These giant Peace roses were created for a spring exhibit. Sometimes,
a painting goes together just like you envisioned. Not very often
though. Grandiflora was one of those times.

Kaleidoscope Iris
Kaleidoscope Iris

There are endless ways to paint an iris. This painting relies on yellow
outlines which unify the entire space. The color is then woven into the
stained glass design. It's fun to do and the results are always surprising.

Lilac Time
Lilac Time

The Central Sierra Historical Society selected this painting to use as
their invitation to their annual fund raiser. I understand this flowering
tree grows wherever winters are cold and summers are not too hot,
perfect for the central Sierras.

The ordinary marigold took on a very majestic appearance in this
painting. When I paint flowers, they all seem extraordinary to my
eye. The woven basket seemed appropriate for these flowers.

looks from neighbors when I sat for several hours staring, thinking,
planning and finally painting these showy poppies.

painters just pick the flowers and retreat to the studio. I liked the
way these turned out.

and this iris really shows its sunny side.

Sweet Peas
Sweet Peas

These sweet peas grew in my garden and the pretty blue vase was a
yard sale treasure. Time is short for sweet peas once they're picked
but I wanted to capture their shape and color before it was too late.
Too bad I couldn't paint the wonderful fragrance.

Wistful Wisteria
Wistful Wisteria

This sentimental floral demonstrates the use of positive and negative
shapes, a technique I use on a heavily textured surface. That means
that some flowers are painted directly and others appear when the
background around them is painted.
